Mirror Mirror on the Wall

Hey Everyone,

We’re already halfway through December, which means we’re approaching towards the end of the year, are you checking on your resolutions from January? I hope you all made a lot of progress..

This post isn’t about makeup or anything, I just want to rant a little about self-image.

I was thinking the other day that It’s quite funny how we approach our friends or family for their opinion whenever we decide to go with a style that is a little out of our comfort zone, and it’s amazing how their answer immediately changes how we feel about ourselves. We light up if they like how we look like and lose our confidence if they don’t. And get lost in emotions when you get mixed up answers.

This whole illustration of behavior isn’t about feeling comfortable about a certain style or an outfit or a makeup look.. it’s about how we yearn for the approval of everyone around us (relatives and strangers).

Do you know how many times I had to look at myself in the mirror and ask what I thought about myself at a given point in my life.. Self-opinion is very important.. I’m 28 and I’ve been though some really tough situations that your average 28 year old Bahraini woman wouldn’t normally go through.. I went through phases of feeling like a complete failure, weak and vulnerable, not good enough to draw, not smart enough to study, not able to do anything by myself and the feeling that everyone else around me had it better in life plus I was pretty much broke.. That was me just talking and complaining about my life a little less than two years ago without doing anything about it.

I look at myself in the mirror A LOT, I don’t pass by a  mirror without checking my outfit or makeup or hair or scarf or whatever.. now I stop sometimes and ask myself what is it that I see.. how I perceive myself?!

My self perception today is a very strong and positive one.

Since I started blogging and sharing my pictures on Instagram I noticed a lot of strangers coming to reflect their self perception on me.. some positive and some not so much, the important thing is how I feel otherwise..

Look at yourself in the mirror..

The way you see yourself affects everything.. and I’m not just talking about career goals here, it affects your relationships, life goals and progress, health, wealth.. everything.

If you have something to achieve and you see yourself achieving it will manifest, with the right steps in the right direction it will.. as long as you’re optimistic and realistic.

At school, we were never taught how to build an image of ourselves and we ended up going through life with the opinions of others, those opinions that have a lot to do with our weaknesses and inability to achieve, instead of strengths.

When at school, a lot of us think we can’t achieve much in life if we get lower grades.. I spent all those years in high school with a 83% GPA thinking I was inadequate and unserious because I wasn’t an A student.. same thing in college. after I have graduated and experienced the real world, I happened to run into some of my old teachers and lecturers who seemed to think really highly of me, but I didn’t know that, instead I had chosen to listen to the negative perception of myself in the mirror.

I took me many years to build this image I see in the mirror, and truth be told it is an ongoing process, I’m still making mistakes and still learning new things about myself and life. And I know I still have a lot to learn.

So please, hear this from me.. Stop listening to what people have to say because they always have something to say.. You’re the expert on you, so trust your instincts and own your decisions.

You’ll thank yourself.

If you reached this far, I would love to read your comments, they keep me going.

    Hi Zahra,

Probably you know me from work, but I am writing to you now as a reader and a follower despite the work relationship we have.

It is quite an interesting piece of reading here and I do agree with every word said. Self image is super important for a person to build his/her life and hit the target no matter how far it seems or how hard it looks to reach there.

As for you, I would like you to know that you are an amazing artist and a good writer. My words are not just complements, but based on my writing and Marketing background, I do think you are all the above mentioned 🙂

    Keep going Zahra!

    Regards,

I was just smiling while readying the above dear .. you touched my feelings in many of your points and yes the most important thing is how we are looking to ourselves and yes it’s not very important what others think we are ..

By end of this year I reached the stage that I am confident enough and proud of myself alot 💖

In the end of the day, “we are only confined by the walls we build by ourselves”.

And the sad part is, many people think so little of what they are & what they are capable of doing, and that’s why fear destroys way more dreams than failure ever did ..

Great topic, lovely content. Keep it up.

My darling, you are very good at selecting your topics. But even better at putting them out there!
It takes alot of courage, mentally and emotionally to gather all the feelings and ideas you have and let them fall into their right places. Hats off to you my dear!

    Dearest Zahra,
How relatable is this topic! You’re basically describing my life now (the thoughts you had on yourself two years ago) but I keep looking in the mirror and I do tell my self that whatever I’m going through now is just a hiccup and it will pass. I am gradually working on my self image as it’s slowly starting to turn into positive notes, makes me feel proud.

We are strong women. And it is amazingly shocking and expected at the same time that how many women around us went or are going through the same exact thing. I believe we should shake off everything we were ever taught or convinced with about how we aren’t good enough because we are good enough.

Your post is a message of hope to us women knowing we aren’t alone, and knowing that it does get better actually makes things A HELL LOT BETTER.

God bless you habibti and may you march forever forward.

Life is not black and white, there is no right or wrong. For others a gpa of 83% is nothing, and for some it is the path for their success and happiness. People most of the times talk about your outcome, but they don’t know the journey you went through, the things you learned and gained. My life is my kingdom, and I will not let others take control in my kingdom.
